Q1) Is it allowed for a muslim to live in a Metaverse or to use a Metaverse or to interact with a Metaverse

Answer

Assalāmuʿalaykum Wa Raḥmatullāhi Wa Barakātuh

A Muslim is completely discouraged from involving himself in a metaverse (virtual-reality space) since it takes a person away from the objective and purpose of human life which is the worship and remembrance of Allāh ﷻ.

Furthermore, one of the objectives of the Sharīʿah is the protection from anything harmful and detrimental to one’s physical and/or spiritual being.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not cause harm and do not reciprocate harm”.

The following harms in respective to a metaverse has been documented and proven factual:

  • Forgetting Allāh ﷻ
  • Losing track of time
  • Addiction
  • Separating one from the real, natural world
  • Overstimulation of the senses
  • Communication with strangers of the opposite gender; hence, loss of modesty and chastity.

Based on the above, one should completely abstain from such, whether it be in terms of living, using, or interacting with a metaverse.
