Sunni female with shia family, marriage/wali rules

16 Apr 2023 Ref-No#: 5387

I am a sunni female (24) and my parents and extended family are shia (especially my dad’s side they’re on a very extreme end). I want to get married to a sunni male (from a different natioality). My dad rejected, saying that he will only accept to get me married to a shia male (and from my nationality) or else I can just stay unmarried. In this case, can I get married without my dad as a wali and have a sunni sheikh as a wali instead? Keeping in mind that I am living separate from my parent now and in a different country (purpose: study) and I really need to get married to protect myself from haram inshallah.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Respected sister,

May Allah bless you with barakah in your faith and life. Protect you from all haram and harm.

For a female your age, the requirements of a valid nikah is 1: offer and acceptance of a nikah agreement by the bride and groom to be, 2:i n presence of two male or one male and two female witnesses. You get the right to Mehr automatically on nikah.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
