Is using a Roblox account nobody uses haram?

04 Dec 2021 Ref-No#: 4092

Assalamualaikum. A little backstory. My own Roblox game account got stolen from me by a scam, and this other person helped me get into an old 2012 account that is not mine, neither his. I helped him get into it and he said he would let me have it. Then when I started I unfortunately spent money on it and he got mad that I changed the password and started using it. I blocked him and continued. Now I am wondering whether I using the game account is haram. The original owner is unknown and they have probably not used it since it was made. I am basically using an account that is somebody else’s that they did not use for so many years. I would leave it but I spent money on it. Is it haram to continue using it? What should I do? I was 11 when this happened and spend Eid money on it.

Answer

Wa ‘Alaykumus Salām Wa Raḥmatullāhi Wa Barakātuh

In principle, it is impermissible to use what does not belong to one, and also to derive benefit therefrom, without the actual owner’s permission.

In the enquired scenario, it is advisable that you seize using such an account. It should now not be regarded as a loss of money that you have spent on it as you have derived benefit from it up to this point.

Since the actual owner cannot be identified, you may consider giving charity on his behalf in that if he is a Muslim then the rewards as a result of such charity shall devolve upon him, and if he is a non-Muslim then to make the intention of it being a means for his guidance towards Islām.
