doubting islam and statements that might constitute kufr

30 Nov 2021 Ref-No#: 3977

Assalamualaykum Mufti
I have question regarding statements of kufr.
Will following statement constitute kufr if they are made from a muslim.
A friend of mine said that he “is a muslim because his parents are muslims how can I be certain if islam is true, I want evidence and I will surely believe that islam is the only true divine religion because follower of every religion believes only his religion is true with blind belief”
As muslims are we required to believe without doubt and certainty that islam is true religion, while doubting and asking for evidence will it make muslim a kafir? Is above statement an ok statement or is it a statement of kufr that takes a muslim outside islam ?

Answer

Wa ʿAlaykumus Salām Wa Raḥmatullāhi Wa Barakātuh

While the statements expressed by your friend are problematic and may compromise his faith, we cannot issue a verdict of Kufr regarding them, because such statements hold the possibility of expressing his desire and zeal to fully acquaint himself with Islām and not just be a Muslim by name.

We further advise that you have a local scholar intervene and address his doubts and concerns.
