Wedding and engagement rings

27 Jul 2021 Ref-No#: 2591

Assalamualaikum
I have heard that wearing engagement ring and wedding ring is haram because it imitates kuffar and is shirk to believe it will help make marriage stronger. My question is, if we wear engagement ring and wedding ring as a gift and not believe it as something that will strengthen your marriage, is it permissible? Jazakallah

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu,

The practice of engagement rings and wedding rings is foreign to Islām. This is because they have originated from non-Islamic customaries.

However, if one receives them as a gift, irrespective of the intention of the donor, it may be worn provided it is done so within the confines of the Sharī’ah, such as:

  • It is not worn with any superstitious beliefs.
  • There should be no pride, and it should not be worn to show off.
  • For a male, it should be a silver ring not exceeding 4.37g.
  • For a female, it should be a ring made of real gold and/or silver, or a ring in which the gold and silver content is more than 50 percent. For a female, there is no restriction in terms of weight.
