Is Recording Your Face Permissible?

Wa ‘alaykum as-salām wa Raḥmatullāhi wa Barakātuh,

The primary concern regarding recording one’s face lies in the Islamic rulings on images and videos. Many scholars are cautious about images due to the prohibition against creating representations of living beings, based on numerous Aḥādīth condemning such practices. However, many leading scholars consider digital photography permissible, as it differs from the types of images prohibited in the Aḥādīth.

In light of these differing scholarly opinions, we advise minimizing the use of videos to necessary purposes. For instance, video calls are often used to maintain family ties, videos are recorded highlight oppressions against minority groups, etc.

Besides the issue of photography, displaying one’s face can lead to unnecessary attention or vanity, potentially causing fitnah (temptation) for yourself or viewers.

The permissibility of recording your face hinges on the intent, content, and context of use:

• Educational and Da’wah Purposes: If the intention is to spread Islamic knowledge, call people to Islam, or provide beneficial content, ensure the objective is not self-promotion and there are no incorrect motives.
• Business Purposes: For business, the intention should be to conduct honest, ethical practices that do not involve any form of ḥarām (forbidden) activities. Using videos for marketing or promoting products can be permissible if it adheres to Islamic ethical standards.

To ensure that recording your face aligns with Islamic principles, consider the following guidelines:

• Intent and Purpose: Ensure that your intention is sincere, aiming to benefit others or conduct ethical business. It should not be to become popular or famous, or to impress the audience.
• Content: Avoid content that includes ḥarām elements such as music, inappropriate language, females’ voices, or pictures and visuals of females.
• Modesty: Maintain modesty in appearance and speech, as Islamic decorum is crucial.
• Avoiding Fitnah: Ensure that your videos do not become a source of fitnah (temptation or trial) for yourself or others.

We recommend considering alternative methods of video production that do not require showing your face. You could use animation, voiceovers, or focus on visuals without people. Recording your face for business or Da’wah purposes can be permissible under certain conditions. Ensure your intentions are pure, the content adheres to Islamic principles, and it contributes positively to your goals in business or spreading Islamic knowledge. Rather, use alternate methods to carry out your work.
