Question

Assalamu Alaykum

Q1) How can a man control his anger or stop himself from getting angry in Islam?

✓

Answer

Wa ʿAlaykumus Salām Wa Raḥmatullāhi Wa Barakātuh

The following guidance and methods to control one’s anger have been extracted from the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ:

  • To say the following:

أَعُوْذُ بِاللّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيْم

Translation: “I seek refuge in Allāh ﷻ from the accursed devil”

  • If one is standing then he should sit down. If thereafter the anger does not subside, then he should lay down
  • To perform Wuḍū (ablution)
  • To send salutations upon the Prophet ﷺ

Also, if one is angry with another person, then to leave his presence and distance himself from such a person until his anger has subsided.

It should be noted that anger is part and parcel of the nature of a human being and cannot be prevented in totality, however, one should channel such anger in avenues which pleases Allāh ﷻ such as becoming angry when the commands of Allāh ﷻ are being violated or to be angry at those who oppress the believers for example.

And Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala knows best.
