Answer
Wa’alaykum as-Salām wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuhu,
First, it’s important to acknowledge and commend you for your repentance and commitment to avoiding alcohol. In Islam, sincere repentance is key to regaining Allah’s pleasure and rectifying one’s actions.
Regarding your marriage:
- Validity of the Nikāḥ:
- Repentance Before Nikāḥ: The fact that you repented before the nikāḥ (marriage contract) is significant. Islam emphasizes the importance of repentance, and if you sincerely repented and ceased consuming alcohol before your marriage, this reflects positively on your commitment to Islamic principles.
- Nikāḥ Validity: In Islam, the validity of a marriage contract (nikāḥ) is based on the presence of essential conditions such as mutual consent, the presence of witnesses, and the fulfillment of the mahr (dowry). Your past consumption of alcohol, which occurred before the nikāḥ and after sincere repentance, does not invalidate the nikāḥ itself.
- Disclosure and Trust:
- Honesty with Spouse: It is crucial to be honest and transparent with your spouse. Your wife’s discovery of your past behavior underscores the importance of open communication in a marriage. While your repentance makes your nikāḥ valid, addressing any concerns or misunderstandings with your spouse is vital for maintaining trust and a healthy relationship.
- Moving Forward:
- Continued Repentance and Improvement: Continue to seek Allah’s forgiveness and strive to maintain a lifestyle that aligns with Islamic teachings. Your commitment to avoiding alcohol and focusing on your faith is commendable.
- Strengthening the Marriage: Work on strengthening your relationship with your wife through mutual understanding, support, and communication. Address any issues with patience and seek guidance from knowledgeable scholars or counselors if needed.
In summary, your nikāḥ remains valid based on the conditions being met and your sincere repentance before the marriage. Focus on nurturing a positive and trusting relationship with your spouse while maintaining your commitment to Islamic principles.
And Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala knows best.
