The butcher prays or not?

22 Feb 2023 Ref-No#: 4952

Salam. We know that it is haram to eat meat slaughtered by someone who doesn’t pray at all. In my country, Bangladesh, there are a lot of people who claim themselves to be muslims, but they don’t pray at all or they pray on and off. So when I’ll go to a meat shop and I see the butcher, but I don’t know if he prays or not, what to do? How will I be sure if he prays or not? Do I need to be sure? Do I need to ask? Can I buy from him? I’m so confused.

Answer

Wa’alaykum as-Salām waraḥmatullāhi wa barakātuhu,

If a person is a Muslim and you are sure that he takes the name of Allāh when slaughtering, then it is permissible to eat the meat of the animal that he slaughtered. If there is another butcherer who prays, then it is best to support him. However, if there is no other such seller of meat, then you may purchase from this Muslim, even if he does not pray.
