Question

Assalamalykum, My mom is planning to take me and my sister to Germany to visit family, since my sister doesn’t wear hijab, would it be haram for me to go with them as a mahram for the trip? (Would I be sharing her sins?)

Answer

Wa ‘alaykum as-salām wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuhu,

Jazākallāhu khairan for seeking guidance on this matter. The situation you described requires a nuanced understanding of Islamic principles and the practical aspects of family relations.

Religious Perspective

Responsibilities of a Maḥram: As a Maḥram, your primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and well-being of the women in your care during travel. The issue of Ḥijāb, while important, does not negate your role as a maḥram.

Sister’s Ḥijāb: It is important to encourage your sister to observe Ḥijāb out of love and concern for her spiritual well-being. However, her decision not to wear Ḥijāb does not make your role as a Maḥram invalid or Ḥarām. Your duty remains to support and protect her during the journey.

Practical Steps

  1. Encouragement with Wisdom:
    • Before the trip, gently remind your sister of the importance of wearing Ḥijāb in Islam. Use kind and compassionate language, focusing on love and concern rather than judgment.
  1. Positive Influence:
    • During the trip, lead by example. Demonstrate good Islamic behavior and practice, which might inspire her to reflect on her own practices.
  1. Family Dynamics:
    • Maintain a harmonious relationship with your family. Traveling together as a family can strengthen bonds and provide opportunities for positive influence.

Conclusion

It is not Ḥarām for you to accompany your mother and sister on the trip to Germany. Your role as a Maḥram is valid, and you should fulfill your duty of care and protection during the journey. At the same time, continue to gently encourage your sister to observe Ḥijāb, without creating conflict, tension or an aversion to divine commandments.

May Allāh guide your family and make this journey a means of strengthening your bond and improving your religious practices.

And Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala knows best.
