Doubt About Imams Aqeedah and validity of prayer

Last Ramadan, on the 17th,day of battle of badr, our imam made a dua saying “badringale kaval indakate” (Let the protection of the people of Badr be with us). I’m uncertain if this dua was asking Allah for intercession from the benefits and blessings of the people of Badr, direct blessings, or utilizing tawassul (which I’m not very familiar with). Additionally, “kaval” according to their intention may imply intercession.It has been several months, and I don’t recall all the details clearly.
