Dividing the Zakat al Fitr money among more than two people.

Question

Salam,
I have two questions.
1. If an amount of atleast 70 taka of fitra is obligatory upon me could I divide the money between more than two people?
2. I haven’t paid fitra money for some years because I don’t think i knew it was obligatory. could i be waived from fitra in that case?

Answer

Wa ʿAlaykumus Salām Wa Raḥmatullāhī Wa Barakātuh

  1. It is permissible to divide one’s Ṣadaqah al-Fiṭr amongst several poor people.
  3. If a person fails to discharge his Ṣadaqah al-Fiṭr, he will not be absolved from this obligation, irrespective of whether he was aware of its obligation or not. He will have to fulfill it at some other time.
