Oath of disbelief for something in past

27 Feb 2023 Ref-No#: 4742

Assalamu alaykum
I have a friend who said wallah about something and said that if he is lying he is not Muslim. For example “Wallah if I’m lying I’m not Muslim, that I went there yesterday and last week”.

He is unsure now if it is true and worried that the oath takes him out of Islam. He was not 100% sure he told the truth just before he took the oath but still did and regretted it instantly after. He says he’s 60% sure he did what he said in the oath. The oath was on something completely unrelated to his belief in islam like the example but with “wallah that if I’m lying I’m not Muslim…”.

If this does put him into kufr what should he do as his belief in Islam is the exact same as it was prior to the oath.

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salām wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuhu,

In this case, he does not become a Kāfir.

In future, he should be careful about not mentioning such statements, since this is very sensitive.

His words are considered as an oath.
