Wa’alaykum as Salam warahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

The bleeding that a lady experiences after child birth is called Nifaas (post natal bleeding).There is no minimum period for Nifaas.  The maximum period of Nifaas is forty days. If a female bleeds for forty days or more, then upon the completion of the 40^th day, Nifaas has ended, and Ghusl is compulsory.

If the bleeding stops before forty days, and there is no bleeding or even spotting thereafter, then it is necessary to take the compulsory bath when the bleeding stops.

If the lady does not perform Ghusl, it will not be valid for her to pray and fast.

As for sexual intercourse, it will depend on whether blood stopped before forth days, or not.

If the blood continued until the 40th day, it will be permissible to have intercourse after the duration it takes to take a bath, and commence the prayer has past.

If the bleeding stops before forty days, it will depend whether the woman has a habit of Nifaas (gave birth previously, and the blood ceased after a particular amount of days). If she has a habit, then sexual intercourse will only be permissible once that amount of days have passed.

وأقل النفاس لا حد له لأن تقدم الولد علم الخروج من الرحم فأغنى عن امتداد جعل علما عليه كما في الحيض وأكثره أربعون يوما والزائد عليه استحاضة لحديث أم سلمة رضي الله عنها أن النبي عليه الصلاة والسلام وقت للنفساء أربعين يوما وهو حجة على الشافعي رحمه الله في اعتبار الستين فإن جاوز الدم الأربعين وقد كانت ولدت قبل ذلك ولها عادة في النفاس ردت إلى أيام عادتها لما بينا في الحيض وإن لم تكن لها عادة فابتداء نفاسها أربعون يوما لأنه أمكن جعله نفاسا (الهداية شرح البداية – 1/ 34)

“وأكثره” أي النفاس “أربعون يوما” لأن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وقت للنفساء أربعين يوما إلا أن ترى الطهر قبل ذلك “ولا حد لأقله” أي النفاس إذ لا حاجة إلى أمارة زائدة على الولادة (مراقي الفلاح شرح نور الإيضاح – ص: 140)
