Is my job going to bring in haram income, job decision

25 Jan 2022 Ref-No#: 746

Assalamu alaikum,
I’m a male and I have received a job offer to work in the NHS in the UK as an apprentice clinical support worker, at first I was really interested in the role but later on through work experience I found out that this job involves cleaning patients if they soil themselves in bed which involves looking at their private parts whether they are male or female. This has put me off the job because I do not want to risk my Imaan because I already know that looking at your own private parts for long can have an effect on your memory and I don’t want my daily job involving these sort of roles and will these type of duties make my income haram even though I am helping people in need? So because of this I want to instead work on the business administration side of the NHS which doesn’t involve any of this but at the moment there is no jobs going and I’m scared if I let the other job offer go I may no longer have a chance of working in the NHS. I did istikhara but I’m still awaiting my reply.

I’ve been out of work since I graduated in 2016 and I always try to stay away from haram jobs like working in banks even though my family and friends tempt me because I don’t want to displease Allah nor do I want to earn haram income. I’m just really struggling to find a job in the field that I want which is halal for me. Please advise me on what I should do whether I should accept the clinical support worker job which involves seeing patients naked at times or something different, jazakallah khayr.

Answer

WaʿAlaykumus Salām Wa Raḥmatullāhi Wa Barakātuh

You may accept this type of job since it provides medical benefits to patients. However, as much as you can, to avoid touching and looking at the private organs of others unnecessarily, especially when it comes to others of the opposite gender.

If such practices will lead you to be inclined towards evil and vice, then you will not be permitted to carry out this job.

Notwithstanding the fact that it is great work and most rewarding to tend to the sick and to provide medical care to them.

The income derived from such a job is permissible.
