Is it bidah to read dhikr in congregation on a certain day?

16 Feb 2022 Ref-No#: 4348

My mother gets out family to sit together and join a zoom call with a sheikh and a few hundred people every Thursday without fail and pray a certain dhikr. It lasts about an hour and has some tasbeeh and quran but also has a part where they chant allahu and then just Hu hu Hu hu Allahu. Is this a bidah?

Answer

Assalāmuʿalaykum Wa Raḥmatullāhi Wa Barakātuh

If such a practice is considered to be a part or an injunction of the Sharīʿah, then it will be deemed an innovation.

However, if they are merely just making Thikr without considering it an injunction of the Sharīʿah, then it will not be considered an innovation.

Furthermore, in this scenario, there is no need to arrange a Zoom meeting with a Sheikh to make the Thikr of Allāh ﷻ, as this can be done in one’s personal capacity.

Allāh ﷻ says with regard to the believers in respect to His remembrance:

“Those who remember Allāh standing, sitting, and lying down, who reflect on the creation of the heavens and earth”
