Can an embryologist treat strings with donors

13 Feb 2023 Ref-No#: 4699

Asalamualaikum
I’m a trainee embryologist. In the U.K. donor egg and sperm are very common. I know ivf between unmarried couples and the use of donors to conceive is not allowed. Would I as an embryologist be sinning if I help an unmarried heterosexual or homosexual couple conceive? Or if I treat these patients with a donor egg/sperm. For example if a woman can’t conceive with her egg, will I be sinning if I fertilise a donor egg with her husbands sperm and implant it into her?

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuhu,

Yes, since IVF is only permissible between couples, it will not be permissible to assist those who are not married. An embryologist who assists or treats those who are not Islāmically married is directly assisting with sin. It is not permissible, and the money paid is also Ḥarām.
